ORA acquired by Synopsys

ORA (Optical Research Associate) is now part of Synopsys.

ORA is a leading provider of optical design software and optical engineering services.

As a leader in EDA (electronic design automation), Synopsys supply design software, IP, and service in design, verification and manufacture.

Why moves into optical design market?

"Optical design is a logical adjacency for Synopsys. The analysis and optimization of optical systems involves the same level of algorithmic and software engineering expertise Synopsys is known to provide," said Howard Ko, senior vice president and general manager of Synopsys' silicon engineering group. (By the way: Dr. Ko is an alumnus of National Taiwan University)

For markets:

This acquisition allows Synopsys move into rapidly growing optical markets:
  • Display
  • Solid state lighting (especially: LED)
  • lithography equipments
  • Cameras

The optimization algorithm of optical design is different from electronic design. But more products combine optical components and electronic device. The future design must integrate optics and electronics, like optical transmitted chip, tiny camera module....etc.
