Corning stop synthetic green laser

Corning has decided to discontinue its development and commercialization of synthetic green lasers.
Because of rapid development of direct driven green laser, Corning concluded that the market for synthetic green lasers is limited.

Synthetic Green Laser

Corning use red 1060nm DBR(Distributed Bragg Reflector) to product green 530nm through frequency doubler. This is so-called SHG (Second Harmonic Generation) in nonlinear optics.(

SHG
The material for SHG is periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN), a domain-engineered LiNBO3 crystal.

Disadvantage

  • more comments
  • size (G-1000 : 18.3x6.7x5.6mm)
  • efficiency (need SHG)
  • cost

Market
It aims on projector market, especially pico projector for mobile application. Microvision's first generation laser pico projector adopted Corning synthetic green laser. After Corning press its suspension on green laser, Microvision announce its success in integrating direct green laser into next generation prototype

Good Bye ! Synthetic Green Laser
