Nano Loa: PSS LCD

Nano Loa, Inc, started at US but people from Japan, devotes to develop fast and wide-view-angle liquid crystal display Polarization Shield Smectic (PSS).

PSS is a very interesting technique in liquid crystal display. Nano Loa claims PSS faster more than 100 times than conventional LCD.

PSS advantages
  • fast response <500us
  • wide view angle
  • analog gray scale (linear voltage curve)
  • dark mode, auto dark blank à high contrast
Material
The present invention may be selected from the group consisting of :
  • Smectic C
  • Smectic I
  • Smectic H
  • Chiral Smectic C
  • Chiral Smectic I
  • Chiral Smectic H materials

Polarization
The arrangement of PSS is different from TN, IPS, and MVA but like FLC (Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal), to enhance quadra pole momentum and then improve the response speed.

  • voltage off - molecule turns obliquely in certain angle
  • voltage on - molecule flattens

For TN LCD, vertical dipole in bright mode would be seen in different equivalent direction, making brightness and contrast different with viewing angle.  Compared with TN, PSS's horizontal dipole in bright mode is more stable with different angle and enhance the performance of large view angle. (But there is some problem in dark mode)
Operation
  • voltage on - light passes (molecule horizontal direction)
  • voltage off - light blocks (molecule oblique direction)

Voltage curve tells that the light intensity response linearly to voltage- more linearly than conventional LCD. There is also a benefit of dark mode and absolute voltage control that autoblank frame of zero voltage can eliminate image blur of sequential bright frame.

Market

  • for fast response - important to larger TV
  • for wider view angle
  • for field sequential display - RGB display in time sequential
  • for high aperture ratio requirement - important to high resolution display in portable device
More important point is that PSS can be compatible with the manufacture of modern TN LCD, making it more attractive.

PSS is very interesting technique, but the viewing angle is not as wider as IPS. The fast response has impressing superiority for large LCD size.
